Your child can go to a two week summer camp for as little as $5.00 a day*! That's right. This fee includes transportation to camp, three great meals and two snacks a day, cozy cabins, and super fun activities all supervised by trained, certified staff.

Parents who register early for a two week camp can go on a payment plan that allows payments as low $25.00 per week**.

Attend the information session to get the details.

NO WAITING! We can let you know your fee as soon as you fill out the financial aid application!
*for full campership campers.
**for partial campership campers.

More About Financial Aid
Cost of Camp is $1000 for two weeks and $500 for one week plus a $55 transportation fee. Family Camp and Horseback Riding Camp have different fees--please attend the registration information session for this information.

Full Camperships will pay for the entire cost of camp--all $1000. Parents must pay the $55.00 transportation fee. To qualify for a full campership you need to bring to registration your child's medical card with the correct number--this is for a Title XX campership. Our SCOPE campership requires the camper to attend public school and to do some written work. Your child must attend registration with you so they can write an essay "Why I want to go to Camp this Summer." The parent must also provide written proof their child has Free/Reduced lunches at school.

Partial Campership will pay MORE THAN HALF of the summer camp fee. Parents must pay the $55.00 transportation fee and $400.00 for a two week camp or $200.00 for a one week camp. This campership requires proof of income and dependents--tax return or payroll stub will do.

NEW! GET A DISCOUNT!
Bring in a NEW camper and receive a receive a camp fee discount or camp stuff. More details at the information session.

Pictures from NEW Water Treatment

There is a new sewer line from the pump/well house to behind the cabins.

This is a view inside the pump house. Past staff may not recognized this bare area. We always stored tools in this building. No more! We need the entire building for the tanks.

The blue tanks are House In The Wood's pressure tanks. The water from two wells is pumped into three big blue "bladder tanks" to give us water pressure. The boxes are the new water softeners. Looks like there will be two big tanks for water softening. These pictures were taken a few weeks ago. The plumber has almost finished putting in the new system. I will post pictures when it is completed.

Happy Halloween!

Elliott House, the Director's House decorated for Halloween. It looks REALLY spooky at night!

Elliott House was acquired for the House In the Wood Director to use last November. This is the first part of a master plan to get House In the Wood ready to serve future generations. The Director's House makes us able to compete in the future for a top-notch Director to oversee House In the Wood. Elliott House is just down Bay Road from House In The Wood--about a five minute walk. Watch this blog for news about our upcoming building plans.

Elliott House was made possible by a generous donation from Mike and Kathy  Elliott.

Family Camp Weekend with Head Start

During the first weekend in October, camp was full of families from Northwestern Settlement's Head Start Program. They arrived on Friday evening and then spent all day Saturday playing at camp, Sunday was pack-up, clean-up and leave day.

Saturday morning, we went on a tour of camp with the families. But,  of course, since Alex and I were leading the tours; they quickly became nature walks. Families gathered natural items such as leaves and nuts for their family picture frame. I regret not having photos of their finished frames because they were fantastic.

In the afternoon, the families made rock collections. Some family members looked up the rocks they found to identify them. Others followed my example and made up names for their rocks such as "sparkle rock" and "red rock.". Regardless of their I.D.s, the rocks looked professional glued to a piece of cardboard and labelled.

Later, the adults had the option of "Baking with Val". We made Teddy Bear bread. The bread turned out very nicely AND tasted good too. This is a good project to do with your children. "Kneading" the bread lets them get their hands into it.

Teddy Bear Bread Recipe
Mix together in a bowl 2/3 cup warm water and 1 package of yeast.
Add 1 tsp of sugar and 1/2 tsp of salt
Stir Well
Add 1 cup of flour and 1/4 cup of softened salted butter
Mix well
Put about 1 cup of flour on the counter and spread it out.
Scoop the mixture onto the counter.
Put flour on your hands and knead  Work in the flour on the table. You will know that you have worked in enough flour when the bread no longer sticks to the counter (or your hands) and is smooth and elastic.
Divide the bread into balls and design your own animal on a baking sheet.
We made Teddy Bear's but you can make any shape such as a turtles or fish.
Decorate with raisins.

Let rise for 30 minutes in a warm place until bigger.
Bake in oven at 350 for 15 minutes.

And then eat it warm from the oven. Yum! Yum!

Adam Perez, Summer Camp Director Resigns

The letter that went out to our parents in the mail October 4, 2012...

Dear Summer Camp Parent,
          ,
I am writing to inform you that Adam Perez has resigned as House In The Wood’s Summer Camp Director. He is leaving to pursue opportunities more in line with his career goals.

Adam has been associated with House In The Wood since he was a camper. He served the camp in a variety of roles before becoming Summer Camp Director. During that time, he initiated several valuable improvements in the camp program.

I am temporarily assuming responsibility for our Summer Camp program. I was House In The Wood’s Summer Camp Director for more than 25 years and was responsible for shaping camp’s philosophy and programming.

I am currently working to fill Adam’s position. Please visit our website at www.houseinthewood.org and our blog at houseinthewoodwisconsin.blogspot.com for the latest summer camp information.

After taking this summer off, Terry Fowler will once again manage summer camp’s food service. Terry has more than 20 years experience as a cook and was our Summer Camp Food Service Director for five years.

We will also be announcing a new camp teen program in the near future.

I know you will join me in wishing Adam well in his future endeavors.

Sincerely,
Valerie Wright
Director
House in the Wood Camp
